When To Get Your Hearing Tested?

It can be difficult to know when you should get your hearing tested, but there are a few easy signs that you should book in for a check.

  • Do you feel like people are mumbling?

  • Are you struggling to follow conversations in groups?

  • Are people telling you that your television is too loud?

  • Do you have a persistent ringing in your ears?

  • Are you missing phone calls, doorbells, or alarms?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, then it's time to get your hearing checked.

While these can help you identify the need for a test, there are other reasons and you should always be safe. If you’re unsure about anything or have noticed a change in your hearing, you should always book a test as soon as possible.

FAQs

1. What To Expect From a Hearing Test?

The Hearing & Speech Assessment

Your private hearing test will normally last about 1 hour, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time on the day.

We have ample free parking on-site and toilet facilities at both clinics.

What to expect:

  • Case History: We will spend some time getting to know you and about the recent health of your ears and hearing.

  • Otoscopy: We will carry out a visual examination of the outer ear to make sure it's healthy and show you the results on our client display screen.

  • Pure tone assessment: We will carry out a pure tone hearing test (we play a series of test tones through some headphones that you respond to).  This provides us with an audiogram (very similar to a prescription for your eyes).

  • Speech in quiet test (AB word test): We will carry out a test to measure your ability to hear speech in a quiet environment.

  • Speech in noise test (QuickSIN test): We will carry out a test to measure your ability to hear speech in a noisy environment.

  • Tympanometry: Test to measure the function of the eardrum and middle ear.

Your Test Results

Once we have completed your hearing test in Sheffield or Barnsley, we will then explain your results in clear simple language.

We also provide you with a written report and copy of your audiogram, which is normally emailed to you within 48 hours.

What will be the outcome of my appointment?

  • No hearing loss: You may not have any hearing loss. If this is the case we can suggest other solutions for your hearing issues such as our ear wax removal service.

  • GP referral: In some cases, we may need to refer you to your GP for further testing. If this is the case and with your permission, we will send your GP a referral letter and a copy of your test results:

  • Hearing aids: You may have a hearing loss and would benefit from wearing hearing aids. If this is the case we can discuss your options with you, or learn more about our hearing aids.

2. How Long Does a Full Hearing Test Take?

The duration of a private hearing test will depend on the type of test that you’ve chosen. For our general hearing health checkup, you can expect it to take around 45 minutes. For a full hearing & speech assessment or hearing test with hearing aid re-program, it will normally take about 90 minutes.

3. What Happens if You Fail a Hearing Test?

Unfortunately, in some cases, the hearing test will show that you have some level of hearing loss. Luckily, addressing the underlying causes early is essential to minimising the damage to your hearing. The sooner you can get tested, the earlier you can get advice and information on how to protect your hearing from further damage.

You will receive in-depth and personalised advice on whether you have no hearing loss, or need a GP referral or hearing aids. We can also provide you with information on how to fit your hearing difficulties into your individual lifestyle, and how best to avoid causing more damage in your day-to-day activities.
