Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids in South Yorkshire

Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids are one of the more traditional types of hearing aid fittings. They are typically the most powerful type of hearing aid and are the recommended model for people with profound hearing loss. Behind-the-ear models come in a wide range of sizes, but they are typically bigger than receiver-in-the-canal models. Despite their size, modern behind-the-ear models are discreet, with a clear tube that connects the earpiece to the housing that sits behind the ear.

Hearing Excellence has clinics across South Yorkshire, Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster. Get started by booking your hearing aid consultation, which includes our premium hearing test and speech assessment, to help you find the right hearing aid for your needs.

What Are Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids?

Behind-the-ear hearing aids are the largest and most traditional style of hearing aid. With behind-the-ear models, the main body of the hearing aid sits behind the ear and is connected to the ear mould that sits inside the ear canal with a thin, clear tube. Because they’re larger than in-the-ear hearing aids, behind-the-ear models can provide greater amplification and come with a wide range of features, including Bluetooth connectivity and rechargeable batteries.

Due to their larger size, BTE hearing aids are easy to remove, insert and clean, making them suitable for individuals with dexterity problems. Some individuals also find behind-the-ear hearing aids more comfortable than in-the-ear models because they don’t sit deep in the ear canal.

Benefits of Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids

There are many benefits of opting for a more traditional behind-the-ear hearing aid. Because they are larger in size, they provide ample amplification for all types of hearing loss, especially for those with profound loss. They are also easy to handle because of their size and come with a range of advanced features. Modern behind-the-ear hearing aids are also much more discreet than older versions and are designed to fit nearly behind the ear with only a thin tube visible from the front.

Easy to Use

Behind-the-ear hearing aids are generally easier to use than smaller in-the-ear hearing aids. Most behind-the-ear hearing aids have a button or switch on the main casing which can be used to increase or decrease the volume, or change programmes. BTE models are also often easier to handle, clean and adjust than invisible models, making them ideal for those with dexterity problems.

Powerful

Behind-the-ear hearing aids typically provide higher levels of power than smaller models because they can house larger batteries, allowing for stronger amplification. This makes them suitable for individuals with all types of hearing loss, including severe and profound loss.

Battery Life and Features

Most models of BTE hearing aids come with a wider range of features than smaller, more discreet models. These features include Bluetooth connectivity, wireless streaming, rechargeable batteries and directional microphones.

Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids With Bluetooth

Most of the most popular behind-the-ear hearing aid models include Bluetooth connectivity as standard, such as the Oticon Xceed, Signia Motion Charge & Go and Phonak Naida Lumity. Smaller, invisible hearing aids don’t always include Bluetooth connectivity due to their size, so behind-the-ear hearing aids are an excellent decision if you’re looking for powerful hearing aids with Bluetooth technology.

Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids With Rechargeable Batteries

If you’re looking for comfortable and powerful behind-the-ear hearing aids with long-lasting rechargeable batteries, we recommend the Signia Motion Charge & Go hearing aids. These can provide up to 61  hours of battery life on a single charge and come with a compact charging case.

What’s the Smallest Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aid?

If you’re looking for a powerful behind-the-ear hearing aid with plenty of amplification, but you still want it to look discreet, we would recommend the Signia Motion Charge & Go. These are available in a new, smaller, sleeker design which prioritises comfort. The Motion Charge & Go is smaller and more discreet than other BTE hearing aids

Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids FAQs

1. How Do Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids Work?

Behind-the-ear hearing aids work by using a microphone to capture sounds, processing them digitally to amplify and clarify them and delivering the enhanced sound to the ear through a tube and ear mould. The main housing of the BTE hearing aid sits behind the ear, which holds the microphone, amplifier and speaker, and is connected to the ear mould by a clear, plastic tube. This ear mould is often custom-made to fit the shape of the user’s ear and ensure maximum comfort.

If you’d like to learn more about behind-the-ear hearing aids and find out if they’re the right option for you, we recommend booking a hearing aid consultation and hearing test

2. Are Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids Better Than In-The-Ear?

No, behind-the-ear hearing aids are not necessarily ‘better’ than in-the-ear models. BTE hearing aids typically tend to be more powerful, making them a better choice for those with severe or profound hearing loss. However, In-the-ear hearing aids are a more discreet option for those with mild to severe hearing loss, but they’re likely not powerful enough for individuals with profound loss.

3. Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids vs In-The-Canal: How Do They Compare?

Behind-the-ear and in-the-canal hearing aids are very different types of hearing aids. Traditional BTE models sit mostly behind the ear with only a small portion of the hearing aid sitting in the ear, while ITC models sit inside the ear canal. Let’s look at these differences in more detail below:

  • Visibility: ITC hearing aids sit partially in the canal, making them a more discreet option than traditional behind-the-ear models or larger in-the-ear models. However, many modern BTE models are much smaller than older models and typically only a thin, clear tube is visible from the front.

  • Power and amplification: Because BTE hearing aids are larger, they offer much higher amplification, making them particularly ideal for individuals with severe or profound hearing loss.

  • Comfort: BTE hearing aids may be more comfortable than ITC models, because they sit behind the ear rather than in the ear canal.

  • Range of features: Because of their size, BTE hearing aids come with a wide range of features, such as Bluetooth connectivity, which might be available in some ITC or invisible models.

  • Ease of use: BTE hearing aids are typically easier to use, insert and remove than smaller hearing aid models, such as in-the-canal options, especially for individuals with dexterity issues. They typically also have buttons on the hearing aid itself, allowing users to adjust the volume or programme easily without using an app.

4. Can You Wear Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids With Glasses?

Yes, it is possible to wear behind-the-ear hearing aids with glasses. However, typically smaller BTE models will be more comfortable to wear with glasses than larger ones. It’s also important to opt for frames with thin temples (arms), which allow more room behind the ear for the hearing aid. If you’re struggling with wearing your behind-the-ear hearing aids with your glasses, you might want to consider opting for an in-the-ear model instead.

5. How Do Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids Stay in Place?

To ensure your behind-the-ear hearing aid stays in place, you should ensure that it fits properly. The ear mould should be properly inserted into the ear canal, and the main hearing aid unit should rest comfortably behind your ear with the tube positioned correctly. You can also use hearing aid hooks and clips to keep your BTE hearing aid securely in place, especially during activities or sports.

6. Are BTE Hearing Aids Visible When Worn?

Yes, behind-the-ear hearing aids are typically visible when worn as the main unit sits outside the ear. However, modern BTE models are much smaller, sleeker and more discreet than older models and come in a wide range of colours to suit aesthetic preference or skin tones.

7. How Much Are Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids?

Behind-the-Ear hearing aids can range in price from £1495 for one up to £3790 for a pair. Basic models are generally less expensive, while more sophisticated behind-the-ear (BTE) models with advanced features and improved clarity in noisy environments typically come at a higher cost.

8. How Do I Know if Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids Are Right for Me?

If you have profound hearing loss and need a hearing aid with powerful amplification, a behind-the-ear model will likely be the best option. A BTE model might also work well if you prefer a larger hearing aid that’s easy to handle, insert and clean with a wide range of features. If you’re having trouble deciding between hearing aid models, we recommend booking a hearing aid consultation and hearing test
